Listening to the inner cheerleader and judge; walking the line between freedom/expression and control/accuracy; remembering an inspiring lady; getting ready for a lesson; a triage order for the places in the etudes that need the most help, including a desperately wounded 10/2; a nice surprise about 25/3 and 25/3.
really enjoyed your observations on ‘judge’ and ‘cheerleader’ voices; in a way I have been struggling with them in my own practice recently, although for me there seem to be two kinds of each: one is “attached” feeling and the other is more intelligent. for example, there is an “attached” judge (“you can’t do it”, “you don’t practice enough”, etc) and an intelligent judge (“how am I serving the music?”, “what can I do to bring this to life?”, “am I practicing the right thing, right now?”). same for the ‘cheerleader’. attachment (positive or negative) seems to be all about ego, while intelligence is about honoring the role of a performer.
That’s a really good point. The right kind of judge can be incredibly useful.
Happy to hear about your trip to Florida, and thanks for your thoughts about Nancy!! It is so wonderful to be able to share these few minutes with you each week!!!
