These times are good for practicing, as I texted a student today.
In this episode: an insight about Chopin thanks to Pauline Viardot, with bits of mazurkas by both of them. Also a look at some small hand workarounds in Lili Boulanger with some moments of improvised practicing in Boulanger and Rachmaninov. And a report on a concertgoing activity that brought me great joy.
Stay safe and healthy, everyone!
Dear Jocelyn,
Again, a wonderful podcast! Thank you so very much for sharing it with us.
I love the idea of hearing the Chopin melodic lines sung by a coloratura. The idea is so appealing that I know I’ll never hear one of his etudes again quite the same way. My mind will be imagining that full coloratura voice.
It is such a pleasure to hear you work out issues like the five count in the left hand being steady with the three and two count in the right hand. I used to love the result when finally conquering such challenges.
Jocelyn, your voice sometimes lulls me into hearing it as your Mom’s, so when you were talking about your Mom’s art work, I was suddenly seeing Nina, your grandmother! I had to replay that part of the podcast and remember that you were speaking of Nancy, your Mom. Her artwork, whether photography, drawing, painting or sculpture was always unusually impressive and it makes my heart sing to think that you are carrying on that creative drive. You are so special and remarkable!!
Again, thank you for giving us all the gift of spending time with you as you practice!!
