You are right, Jocelyn! Even before conducting rehearsals, Dad would memorize his score and make hundreds of notes, while listening to LP records of the music. He went into each concert probably knowing the parts of each instrument as well or better than the instrumentalist!

You said something really important to me… about the unreliability of memorizing by the shape of the hand. (I use the “shape of the hand” a *lot* in memorizing, and I’m having a big problem with things falling apart in performance.) But what else can you use, especially when things get complicated? For instance, take the climax of op.25/1 (towards the end, right before the return to Ab). Do you really think through all those chords music-theoretically while you’re performing? Do you just memorize the individual notes (“F”, “G”, etc.)? What are the forms of memory that will remain intact for the bizarre, other-worldly experience of performing? Because you’re right: the shape of the hand is not one of them. 🙂
